The Danger of Wealth

Mar 3, 2024    Daniel Englehart

This morning we continue in our study through the book of James, looking at James 5:1-6. James giving a warning to the rich. Wealth can be dangerous. The love of money can deceive us and destroy us. Wealth discloses where our true treasure lies. In the pursuit of wealth we can be tempted to take shortcuts, defraud, or destroy others. It can deaden un in self-indulgence and bring damnation.

James might include this vivid and graphic warning for those who might be tempted to act like these wealthy oppressors. It also gives hope to the righteous that the Lord of hosts sees and hears. He's compassionate and will bring justice. This teaching brings both a condemnation and consolation. We pray that we would follow the example of Jesus and be described not as living on the earth in luxury and self-indulgence, but as modest and self-sacrificial.
