The Servant of the Lord
This morning we continue in our study through the gospel according to Matthew as we consider Matthew 12:15-37. Matthew shows how Jesus fulfills what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah. Jesus is the chosen servant of the Lord. He will not break a bruised reed and he will not put out a smoldering wick, until he brings justice to victory and in his name the Gentiles will hope. Jesus drives our demons by the Spirit of God showing that the kingdom of God has come upon them. Jesus is stronger than Satan and is plundering his house.
Jesus is God's chosen servant, the meek and lowly Savior. He comes to people who are bruised and battered, whose flame is flickering out. Richard Sibbes, a Puritan Pastor, wrote, "Are you bruised? Be of good comfort, he calls you. Conceal not your wounds, open all before him and...go to Christ...there is more mercy in Him than sin in you." Would God give us grace to be transformed from the inside out that we would produce good fruit. We trust in the promise, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).
