The Authority of the Son

This morning we continue in our study through the gospel according to Matthew as we consider Matthew 21:23-46. In our text today we see Jesus' authority challenged and then he shares two parables in judgment of the chief priests and elders of the people of Israel. These parables reveal the nature of true faith. Jesus teaches that the kingdom of God belongs to those who repent and receive the gospel in fruitful faith. In the final parable we see that Jesus is the Son, sent from the Father in Heaven who is the final and central revelation of God. We see that the Father in Heaven is slow to anger, patient, and abounding in love. If Jesus is the cornerstone, submitting to his authority and building your life on him is a sure foundation. The authority of Jesus doesn’t hurt you, it heals you and seeks your good. His commandments don’t enslave you—they set you free. Would God give us grace not to stumble over Jesus, but to receive Him and His authority in our lives. With God's help, may we bear fruit in keeping with repentance as we build our lives on Jesus Christ, the Chief Cornerstone.
