Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham
This morning we begin what will be, Lord willing, a 57 week journey through the gospel according to Matthew. Matthew has beautifully structured this gospel account to show us who Jesus is. Matthew shows us that Jesus is the new Moses, the Messiah from the line of King David, the Son of Abraham, and Immanuel or God with us. We open our study as we consider the origins of Jesus from Matthew 1:1-17. We find in the first sentence, "The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham" (Matthew 1:1).
Jesus is the Christ or the Messiah. He's the promised deliverer who would rescue God's people. Jesus is the son of David who will establish an eternal kingdom of peace and security. Finally, Jesus is the son of Abraham. All of the world can be blessed by God in Jesus. This genealogy shows us that Jesus was a real person who's the fulfillment of what the story from Genesis to Chronicles pointed to. The people Matthew includes and highlights in the genealogy demonstrate the gospel promise that all people can find forgiveness and grace in Jesus if they believe in him.
