The Parable of the Weeds

This morning we continue in our study through the gospel according to Matthew as we consider Matthew 13:24-43. Jesus gives three parables about weeds among wheat, mustard seeds, and leaven. The structure of the text seems to emphasize a central point that the kingdom of God will grow together alongside evil. While the kingdom of heaven may seem insignificant and small at the start, it will inevitably grow like a mustard seed or leaven that's hidden in flour. These parables invite us to see the mercy and wisdom of God in delayed judgement. We see in these parables the patience of God and the promises of the kingdom. At the end of the age there's a promise of final judgement for those guilty of lawlessness and glory for those who listen and respond in faith. Would God give us ears to hear to respond in faith, rejoice in hope, and be patient in tribulation.
